June 2010

I had the pleasure of working with the absolutely gorgeous Joan Smalls
for the CFDA Awards -  known as the fashion industry’s version of the
Oscars. Joan was just proclaimed to be fashion's new "It Girl" by Andre
Leon Talley in the June issue of American VOGUE. She is an absolute
sweetheart and we had so much fun working together.

She got rave reviews for her chic Prabal Gurung mini dress,
stunning Monique Péan jewelry and covetable Christian
Louboutin "Fernando" Sandals.

My favorite review of her outfit...

"Joan Smalls at CFDA awards. Wowzer! Work it out Ms. Smalls!"

It's hard to top that!

Here's a closeup of Joan's jewelry - she's wearing naturally-shed horn
cuffs and earrings fashioned from fossilized Wooly Mammoth. You can
learn more about Monique and her fantastic line at  www.moniquepean.com.

I also got a chance to work with an old friend - supermodel Alek Wek
for The Whitney Art Party. Alek and I met (too many years ago to admit to)
on a trip to South Africa for a Naomi Campbell charity fashion show. Alek
was just starting her career then and I can say without hesitation that she is
still as strikingly beautiful, funny and humble as she was back then. We had \
a ball at the party and Alek created quite a stir!

"How wonderfully elegant and naturally graceful does Alek Wek look
in this scrumptious floor-length fuchsia gown? It not only pops against
her famed
ebony skin, but the beautiful beading on the straps, matching
box clutch, and understated accessories enhance this gown's "Wow!"
factor."

"It was her gown that drew the most attention of the whole party. She
chose a deep pink Edition by Georges Chakra gown, which flowed out
as she walked as if she had her own personal wind machine."

To support the wonderful Anne Hathaway and her work on behalf of The Lollipop Theater Network, Nick gave a group of very deserving young people a once in a lifetime chance to shine on a very special red carpet. The Lollipop Theater Network, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) group dedicated to bringing the magic of movies to children confined to hospitals nationwide due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses, has worked with the Tribeca Film Festival for the past three years to create a special opening night party for some very deserving children.

This year, the event’s organizers decided to add a special red carpet entrance (complete with paparazzi) to the party. So Nick and Anne’s favorite hairstylist, the brilliant Ted Gibson, were enlisted to style the patients for their glamorous outing. Patients at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital were treated to makeovers with designer duds from the likes of DKNY, Target, The Children’s Place, Dapper Lads, Berkley Girl, Ashor's Room and The Original Pettiskirt by Kaiya Eve. The glam-fest continued as Ted’s amazing team treated the patients to the sort of beauty treatments, hair and makeup that is usually reserved for Hollywood’s most glamorous leading ladies. Ted is the genius behind the locks of ladies like Anne, Angelina Jolie, Ashanti, Kiera Knightley (and the list goes on…) and one of the most sought-after editorial, runway, and celebrity hair stylists in the business. His salon is something that must be experienced to be believed!

The event was truly amazing and the patients had a blast – some were even wearing their frocks and tiaras the next day during rounds! But most importantly, the event brought a lot of joy into the lives of some very deserving children.

Nick collaborated with Earth Pledge’s Executive Director Leslie Hoffman and Eco-Activist & Lancome Spokesmodel Elettra Wiedemann on the historic Future Fashion Show.

Many of the world’s top fashion designers participated in the show, creating beautiful eco-friendly designs out of organic fabrics and sustainable materials. Even the show’s runway, crafted from fallen Sri Lankan Kumbuk trees (further reclaimed to make tables following the show), was a tribute to sustainability.

The Future Fashion show was featured 30 looks from 30 top designers —
Behnaz Sarafpour, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Doo.Ri, Giambattista Valli, Givenchy, Isabel Toledo, Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Martin Grant, Marti, Michael Kors, Moschino, Narciso Rodriguez, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Rogan, Stella McCartney, Thakoon, Three As Four, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent —  who joined together to raise awareness about the need for the fashion industry and commercial clothing manufacturers to use sustainable materials and employ more eco-friendly practices in the future.

"These materials are all selected because they reduce harmful chemical and energy use, and protect land resources for future generations," explained Hoffman.

The goal of Future Fashion was to educate the industry and demonstrate that being "green" can be fashionable.

Nick worked with Earth Pledge to enlist designers, cultivate relationships and help bring Future Fashion to life. The project’s other high profile collaborators included Ms. Wiedemann, Shalom Harlow, Fabien Baron, Bureau Betak and Julie Gilhart. Sponsors included Lexus Hybrid Innovations, Pure and Natural, and Barneys New York.

The models included Ms. Wiedemann, Shalom Harlow Julia Stegner, Coco Rocha, Caroline Trentini, Liya Kebede, Irina Lazareanu, Jessica Stam, Natasha Poly, Catherine McNeil, Sasha Pivovarova, Suvi Koponen, Magdalena Frackowiak, Alyona Osmanova, Bruna Tenorio, Du Juan and Freja Beha — all of whom donated their time.
